In 1936 Suiun authored a woodblock-printed picture book entitled Nanga Kōshū Roku (i.e., Nanga Short Course Record). It included the ten pictures of flowers and (or) birds shown below. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Suiun’s drawing style was influenced by a Chinese painting style called Nanga (i.e., southern painting) by the Japanese. Nanga artists used a combination of discontinuous lines and areas of blotchy pigment to sketch their subjects. The resulting picture appears to be unfinished, drawn in a moment of artistic inspiration which, unfortunately, was short-lived. To see more pictures from Suiun’s book click here.
